Victory Report: Rain Tax Stopped!
We are pleased to report that the Elgin City Council in a 5 to 4 vote stopped the "Rain Tax" last Wednesday. Councilman Gavin took the lead and fulfilled a campaign promise by making a motion to put a stop to this unpopular tax. He stood his ground against vocal opposition by Councilman Dunne to amend the 5 year strategic plan and remove the storm water management fee from consideration. While the removal from the plan does not permanently eliminate the Rain Tax, it will require any council member reintroducing it to stand up and fully explain why it would be necessary and clearly delineate what the revenue would be used for.
Thank you to everyone who supported the efforts of Elgin OCTAVE by contributing your time, treasure, and, most importantly, votes in the last election. Your clear will expressed through your votes empowered the council's fiscal conservatives--John Prigge, Terry Gavin, and Toby Shaw--along with Anna Moeller and Tish Powell to provide this victory for the taxpayers of Elgin. The remainder of the council, Mayor Kaptain, Richard Dunne, Carol Rauschenberger, and John Steffen, fought to keep this unpopular tax alive and we are optimistic that the voters will hold them accountable. Our success in stopping the Rain Tax, would not have been possible without your unwavering support. And this is only the beginning, Elgin OCTAVE will continue its vigilance and diligently fight for you, the taxpayer, in all that we do. Sincerely, Elgin OCTAVE Link to the Daily Herald article: http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20131106/news/711069656/ |
